John, I'm not so sure cost is the primary driver of competitive success in technology. Brand equity in the consumer mkt. is critical, and I would argue reputation for quality is extremely important in the enterprise sector. In other words, if a company is satisified with IBM for its computing needs, then it might take a compelling reason for it to switch to a new vendor. But taken together (reputation, technology leadership, cost, etc), my money would be on a CPQ based on WINTEL technology, rather than an IBM based on its proprietary technology.
