DJ Japan MOF Kuroda -2: Economists Hopeful For U.S. Recovery

02 Dec 19:51

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's top financial diplomat said Monday he doesn't

expect the dollar will keep falling despite the U.S. economic slump in the

third quarter, as the world's largest economy will likely recover later next

year.

"I don't think the dollar will keep weakening," Vice Finance Minister for

International Affairs Haruhiko Kuroda told reporters.

"I think the U.S economy will recover in the latter half of next year," he

added.

The U.S. economy, battered by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, turned in its

worst performance in a decade during the third quarter, shrinking at a rate of

1.1%.

But hopes the U.S. economy will shake off its woes and stage a recovery

before too long have begun to underpin the U.S. currency. Many private

economists are hopeful for a turnaround in the U.S. economy next year.

On the euro, Kuroda repeated that the currency is undervalued.

"It won't be surprising to see the euro strengthen against the yen and the

dollar," Kuroda said.

Kuroda has said many times in the past that the euro is undervalued.
