Bandwidth9 Brings Tunability to Metro-Optix CityStream Bandwidth Management Platform

December 03, 2001 07:01:00 (ET)

FREMONT, Calif. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec 3, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Bandwidth9, Inc., today announced a joint development agreement with Metro-Optix, integrating Bandwidth9's MetroFlex(TM) tunable transmitter into the Metro-Optix CityStream(TM) bandwidth management platform. CityStream is the only protocol-agile, multi-layer bandwidth manager of its kind supporting critical SONET/SDH, ATM, and IP technologies simultaneously. The combined solution will ease the burden of network management on today's metropolitan service providers by lowering equipment costs, increasing service flexibility, and providing an integrated solution to deliver a mixture of voice, Internet, and other data services.

"We believe adding tunability to our CityStream family of products will extend our leadership in the development of break-through approaches to bandwidth management for telecommunications providers," said Arun Bellary, chairman and CEO of Metro-Optix. "Tunability is an important tool and will allow us to offer further cost savings and bandwidth efficiencies in complex metro networks, and it will be critical to the success of our service provider customers."

"Our MetroFlex tunable transmitter was specifically designed to deliver wavelength control and improve bandwidth utilization in metro networks, and it is an ideal solution for Metro-Optix's CityStream product family," said Hatch Graham, chairman and CEO of Bandwidth9. "Preliminary efforts between our companies have provided a strong indication that both existing and future CityStream systems will benefit from the economic and performance advantages of Bandwidth9's tunable transmitters," adds Graham.

Bandwidth9's MetroFlex tunable optical transmitter product has a unique blend of industry-leading monolithic Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and Micro Electrical Mechanical Structure (MEMS) technology that enables precision tuning, direct modulation, and low-cost manufacturing. The Bandwidth9 transmitter tunes and locks to a specific wavelength in less than 200 microseconds -- 50 times faster than competing solutions -- and it boasts a truly continuous tuning range that brings more deployment and provisioning flexibility to metro carriers.

"Today's metro networks create specific challenges for service providers because the amount of traffic is increasing exponentially and is delivered via a wide variety of transport technologies," said Stephen Montgomery, president of ElectroniCast. "As a result, products that allow carriers to reduce capital costs, and at the same time utilize existing bandwidth more efficiently, present a very attractive proposition."
