Actually, I think you're quite wrong here. Many profess to. They just have learned not to do it in public, because even professed believers like you scoff. And there are some televangelists out there who make professing to speak directly to God seem, uh, sleezy.

So many who speak with God do not discuss publicly that they do so.

Look what happened to Joan of Arc, for example, as a result of hearing voices and saying so publicly. Not a fate people will willingly embrace today.

If you credit the Bible, God spoke often and directly to the prophets. It mystifies me why people would think He/She/It would suddenly stop talking to His/Her/Its creations.
