Kathleen, local politics is very interesting. If re-election is a local politician's top priority, #2 on the hit parade is expanding the tax base. I'm not that up to speed on the specifics of the tax concessions, but I would imagine that the politicans' stance in negotiations would be something like "hey, we want that facility open, we understand that your company has just gone through a tough time, and we're willing to meet you halfway because it's in our long-term interests and the interests of our constituents to do so; however, there comes a point when in the absence of action on your part we're going to have to stop using carrots and start using the stick..."
Maybe taking some road improvement funds off the table is using the stick. On the other hand, maybe someone totally unfamiliar w/ the situation just saw state funds sitting in an account going unused and did some shuffling. Or maybe it's a way for the local guys to play "good cop, bad cop" and have a little more leverage going forward.
That's what's great about this thread - there are just so many interesting angles to the MU story, IMHO.
As silly as it sounds, I bet someone would be able to tie the Rosewell/UFO crash site "cover-up" to Micron...
For example:
"Why are they able to shrink their dies better than the competition? Could it be the application of some advanced alien technology discovered in the wreckage of an extraterrestrial spacecraft 50 years ago in the New Mexico desert?"
I'd love to see Kurlack pitch that one <g>
At least it makes more sense right now than "firming DRAM prices".
All kidding aside, I think watching the politics of the Lehi situation play out is relevant, long-term.
Good trading,
