I am not in a position to settle the question, of course, but can only speak out of my experience in talking about religion with friends at various times in my life. Maybe you are right, that even in an intimate setting, some would not venture to admit that God audibly spoke to them. How can I say? Nevertheless, in my experience, few actually profess to hear God, either physically or "in their heads", even if they believe that God helps them in various ways.

It is quite true that God spoke to the prophets. Of course, that was a peculiarity of their vocation. God is not portrayed as speaking directly to most people in the Bible. Even most of the patriarchs spoke to angels, Abraham being the most obvious exception. If God were portrayed as commonly speaking to people, you might have a point, but since He is not, and since we were banished from Eden, it is no great mystery if few or none can hear Him today......
