| I take it that all Christians agree, at a minimum, with the Apostle's Creed, and perhaps, though more problematically, the Nicene. Since I am talking about Christians rather than the members of one denomination, I suppose that adhering to the Apostle's creed and giving substantial credence to the Bible, especially the New Testament, is the minimum standard for being a Christian. (When I say "substantial credence", I mean that one thinks it true in its theological substance, if faulty in some details). Obviously, there is substantial disagreement in matters like ecclesiology, the sacraments, and other things. That is neither here nor there. There must be something that distinguishes Christians from other faiths. Even most modern Jews belief in a secularized Jesus, a wise man whom people mistook for divine, and can read the New Testament in the way that Thomas Jefferson, a deist, did..... |
