CatLady,

<<I think Segway will be fantastic for certain niche applications, warehouses, etc. >>

Yep, I agree, and so apparently does Mr. Kamen and DEKA.

<<My scepticism is directed towards use as a general commuter vehicle. >>

Yep, I agree, and so apparently does Mr. Kamen and DEKA...at least until society re-structures itself around Segway rather than long auto commutes.

<<Would you give up your motorcycle for one?>>

OMG!! No! But you've asked an "either or" question. With a fatter wallet I'd have both! <BG>

<<BTW, where do mail carriers walk routes but not have to deal with stairs? >>

I assume the Postmaster has that info, therefore his great interest. It's common sense though. If carriers could get around three times as fast and carry three times as much mail (via a Segway mail wagon tagging along via wireless connection) postal delivery costs could be cut three times. As labor is one of the highest costs of any corporation, savings could be substantial.

Re the stairs I would think they would just park at the bottom and climb as usual. But, FWIW, in my neighborhood I think the carrier's delivery efficiency could reach that "three times" level. And as you see, I don't live in Florida flatland country.
