Australian SAS arrive in Afghanistan An advance party of elite Australian commandos has arrived in Afghanistan and more are to follow to join US forces in the southern part of the country. "Australian forces will operate with US forces in southern Afghanistan to assist in the fight against the Taliban and al Qaida," defence minister Robert Hill said. The arriving Australian troops come from a contingent of 150 SAS commandos that were deployed to the Gulf last month. In total, Australia has committed 1,550 military personnel along with warships and aircraft. According to reports out of Afghanistan, about five liaison officers from Australia, Britain and Germany joined a US base set up by Marines south west of Kandahar. The base, established when Marines seized a sand airfield a week ago, is within striking distance of Kandahar, the last major city in the hands of the crippled Taliban, which once ruled most of Afghanistan. Mr Hill said the SAS would operate under Australian command and their tasks will be coordinated through a coalition command centre. The duration of the operation was not known, but it could continue for several months, he said. ananova.com
