Even before it was formulated, I suppose that it was what was taught by the Church. Even if true, why does the Church get to determine the definition of Christian? Initially there were lots of individual congregations and churches around with no centralized structure. Jesus didn't decree any sort of organizational structure, any hierarchy of priests, bishops, etc. All of that was added by people some of whom were apparently quite control oriented, even anal retentive. That's all fine for those what like it, but I don't think it defines Christianity.
