I'd be willing to pay a few cents more Don't have to, necessarily.

Dependence on oil - from ME (or anywhere else.)

It costs a great deal less to conserve 10% than to find and develop the oil needed to maintain present rate of consumption never mind finding and developing for future consumption.

Just make up some arbitrary numbers and do the arithmetic.

The real threat to ME oil producing countries would come from the west giving up its SUVs, etc.

West's policy would become less hypnotized by oil.

In fact, right now, given the huge amount of oil money flowing to ME kleptocracies, one could argue they are far more dependent on the West than the West is dependent on them.

The question for (eg) Saudis if they are ever faced with a relentless policy from the West regarding internal reform is do they want to go hard, or easy. Hard means losing everything (including quite likely their heads), easy means getting out the other end alive, wealthy, and possibly even respected.

If the time ever comes be interesting to see which they choose.
