I don't want to press the issue too hard since you seem to want to move on, but even in the New Testament itself there are letters that were written by Paul to different churches that dealt with instructing believers in the faith. These letters were to be read and studied and then passed to other local groups of believers (churches)to read and study. These letters are dated very early, so study has indeed been the focus of the Church from the very beginning.

As far as no complete Bible existing for the early church, of course you are correct, but they did have the Hebrew scriptures, and direct Apostolic teaching, both written and oral. The form of the Church has, and will change, but the essence is the same today as it was then.
