I fear the short attention span of the American people. We were less than a month into the campaign in Afghanistan and the press began questioning the Pentagon's tactics and a perceived (by the press at least) "lack of progress." Had the Taliban not crumbled so quickly, we'd surely have more of the second guessing and armchair quarterbacking that the American press is so adept at.

6-9 months will not be enough time to make any significant progress against the Al Queda terrorist organization, much less the other organizations that have made clear their intentions to harm us. If the press and public begin clamoring for a speedy end to the campaign, and if the government acquiesces, we'll be in line for another major attack on U.S. soil or, possibly, a major biological assault that could include anthrax (recall that 50 kg of anthrax spread upwind of a major city under the right conditions has the potential to kill 2,000,000 to 3,000,000) or smallpox or any other of a variety of toxins.

We can't let up, and I'm confident that as long as George W. Bush is in the White House, we won't.
