The cost of a 1.26 gigahertz Pentium III for servers dropped to $241 each from $300, according to Intel's Web site. A 1.13 GHz and a 1.1 GHz model for desktop PCs each fell 10 percent to $173, and a 1 GHz version dropped 17 percent to $143. Intel, which has started selling more of the newer Pentium 4 chips than Pentium IIIs, is introducing faster processors and reducing prices to get PC makers to make the switch. The Santa Clara, California-based company has chopped Pentium 4 prices by as much as 84 percent since the chip's November debut to spur demand.
