Nintendo Sells 600,000 GameCube Consoles in U.S. in 15 Days

Redmond, Washington, Dec. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co. said it sold 600,000 GameCube consoles in the U.S. in the 15 days since its debut as the second-largest video-game console maker competes with Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp. for Christmas sales.

The Kyoto, Japan-based company has sold 27 GameCube consoles per minute since Nov. 18, Nintendo of America Inc., a subsidiary of the Japanese game maker, said in a release distributed by Business Wire, citing the company's survey of retailers.

Nintendo is vying against Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox during the holiday shopping season. The gamemaker is trying to attract consumers with the lower price of its $199 console, $100 cheaper than Xbox and PlayStation 2.

``Nintendo GameCube's advantages in game quality and affordability are being amply demonstrated in stores across America,'' said Peter Main, executive vice president sales and marketing at Nintendo of America, in the statement.

The GameCube console went on sale in the U.S. three days after the debut of Microsoft's Xbox.
