As to the Japanese internment, it came so suddenly that nobody had a chance to object.

And it went on for years and there was no significant objection.

There was a study done a number of years ago with college students. Where they sat behind a screen and a person on the other side of the screen would answer questions. If the question was answered incorrectly the student would initiate a "mild shock". The students were directed from time to time to turn up the "voltage"; they all had meters that indicated when the level got to potentially lethal levels. They all continued to accept the direction of the master controller in spite of any screaming they heard from the other side of the screen and crossed the threshhold. The persons on the other side of the screen played the part, but the students didn't know that.

I believe that the lessons of history will preclude our doing anything stupid in the future.

You are certainly an optimist. Every where I look at world events it seems that we are much more likely to repeat them than we are to learn from them.
