My nephew was released recently from prison in Louisiana after being there for two years. Believe me, he was punished. He was not convicted of anything violent, just petty theft and personal drug use. He was without any of the luxuries you mention and didn't even have a radio to listen to for a lot of his prison time. He was required to work while in jail at various laboring jobs.
Now, he is out and working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and seems to be doing OK and his prison experience is one he definitely doesn't want to repeat.
