RD...spoken like a true democrat. While I have no statistical figures to base my question, I wonder what a fund started in 1984 and vested by high quality equities (ala the top 10 S&P), versus the benefits one should expect from Social Security would be today (even though the stock market roller coaster syndrome is inevitable)?

If I had my druthers, I would probably opt for the former. What about you?
