It's exactly what Bill Safire noted today.

Safire presumably believes that Arafat's ego is so enormous that he would rather remain a leader of a powerless organization than throw his lot in with Hamas, etc., and risk not only political ruin but also possible physical annihilation.

Arafat is a dead man walking. I predicted his end would happen this Spring, but it seems that events have stepped up the pace.

The Palestinians are at a fork in the road. Negotiate and recognize Israel or get behind Hamas, Egyptian Jihad, and Hizbollah and risk almost certain destruction.

I think that the suicidal types will prevail. There seems to be an increase in the cachet associated with martyrdom in the Middle East and South Asia in the last two or three years. Plus, it seems that the Middle Eastern Islamic mentality follows the suicidal maximalists [your word] despite the obvious downside in doing so.

One would think that the Islamist maximalists [love that word] would get tired of being destroyed every time they engage in a martial conflict. The reasons for this lack of objective quantification of their military and political disadvantages would make a fascinating study.
