I have not read the book but I just read an online review of it by Daniel Pipes. He notes that Ajami's conclusion about the Islamists' failure to act in a more or less objective manner when going down the road of military and political perdition is based on the fact that Arab nationalism somehow rewards the extravagant loser instead of the pragmatist. According to Pipes, "[e]xtemism and failure, in other words, beget more of the same."

I suppose the deeper question is why does Arab nationalism reward the romantic loser? Utterly against all principles of self-preservation.
