The lifer is in a condition of servitude, to be sure. However, he is not reduced to the status of chattel, but remains a person, and even citizen, under the law. Thus, he can continue to file appeals or requests for clemency; he can insist upon humane treatment (no "cruel and unusual punishment"); he inherit, and even if he has no chance to spend it, he can assign the inheritance to the person of his choice; and so on.
