Thanks Darlene. I am embarrassed to say that I actually can follow his drift and will try it out the next time I am at home with nothing better to do (not tonight). I doubt it will work-there are always additional gotcha's (unexpected browser settings, undocumented Windows features, previous network settings, etc.) which can take forever to find/fix. That's why I have decided to throw in the towel. I know it will be a hassle getting the DSL hooked up, but at least Pacbell is prepared to send someone out to deal with it. And if I stayed, I would have the pleasure of doing it again in a few months when they sell the system to Comcast (or whoever).

I almost forgot the best part. I got a call last night from a T telemarketer wanting to know if I would like to extend my AT&T broadband experience by taking advantage of their offer to provide me with local phone service! 2 months of free service if I signed up now. I was nice (for me, anyway), because it isn't her fault and that has to be the worst job without putting up with abuse from the people you are calling, but I did suggest that her timing wasn't great and perhaps she should be working on some other part of the country for awhile!

I was reminded of when I signed up for @home originally, under a similar offer of "first 3 months are free", and it subsequently took them 3 months after installation to get it working so I effectively got no months free. Perhaps the "2 months free" offer contains a similar forecast...?
