Peres threatens to leave Sharon coalition

ISRAELI prime minister Ariel Sharon was today facing the collapse of his coalition government, as the Labour party threatened to walk out.

Mr Peres objects to moves to 'bring down' the PA
Acting Labour leader and foreign minister Shimon Peres warned that his party could leave the cabinet, saying it was a democratic party and that some members wanted to quit. "Upon my return home, we shall meet and decide," he said from Bucharest.

He denounced what he said was an attempt during last night's cabinet meeting "to bring about the downfall" of the Palestinian Authority, which Mr Sharon's government accused of supporting terrorism.

An Israeli official said Labour ministers walked out of the meeting in protest at Mr Sharon's push to carry out strikes against the Palestinians following three deadly suicide bombings at the weekend.

Public radio said Mr Peres called all his ministers for a special meeting tomorrow to discuss the fallout of the Israeli strikes. It did not specify if Labour would consider withdrawing from Mr Sharon's nine-month-old national unity coalition, which would leave the prime minister with a small majority.

Labour's parliamentary bloc, which includes several members opposed to participation in the coalition, will also meet tomorrow.
