These sorts of discussions make me crazy. This morning I was listening to a local (I live in Chicago IL) talk radio program, and one of the hosts was talking about the 21 year old American kid who was discovered fighting for the Taliban. From what I heard, his point was that the kid should immediately be shot for Treason or something else. He wasn't sure what else, but he was sure that the kid needed to be shot or hung or something. When one of the other hosts made reference to the Constitution, host #1 mumbled something to the effect of "This is why we need Military Tribunals".

I was so angry I had to change the station, so I didn't hear the rest of the discussion. But I couldn't help but wonder what 'This' was. Why are Americans so afraid of the US Constitution? Nothing frightens me more then the thought that my government is using this situation as an opportunity to seize more power over my life. Actually, there is something that frightens me more... It is that if I try to protest that, my fellow citizens will tell me to sit down and shut up!

I hear everyone repeating that George W has said that if you aren't against terrorists, they you are against the US. Who cares? George W saying it doesn't make it so... I have looked at my copy of the Constitution and it says that Congress has the power to define and punish piracies and felonies ... and offenses against the Law of Nations. I don't see anything about military tribunals there. It mentions Congress having the power to declare the punishment of Treason. Nothing about military tribunals there...

Right now, my government is making a grab for power as has been rarely seen in the history of my country (and I voted for these guys. I guess I'm getting what I deserve). Could someone explain to me why it is impossible to fight the Taliban and other Terrorists (they are so important I'm giving them a capital letter 'T') without breaking all the laws of the US?

Whew, I feel better now. Not a lot, but a little better.

Chris
