Let's see. Smallpox. Mortality rate is about 30%, so technically it doesn't qualify. However, the gov't claims it is stockpiling enough vaccine to inoculate every American.
Real nukes? The US does what it can to prevent proliferation. It mat soon do a LOT more than Saddam desires. It is a difficult problem, though, because the Russians have lots of nuclear explosive and we have very limited control over their actions. Since about 50% of the US population lives within 50 miles of a coast, with a large (>25) leaky freighters, this might work. Probably not 50%, more like 30% again. Hard to stop, but I'd say there's a good chance whoever did it would get caught. Too many trails and tracks left behind. And then their side would be in for some REALLY serious trouble. Like some very good nukes of ours coming back.
Dirty bombs? (Conventional explosives spreading nuclear material.) Not as effective as real nukes and just as much chance of getting caught resulting in the same US response.
Other biological weapons? Good ones take lots of infrastructure. That means nation-state involvement and that means a juicy target for our response.
Chemicals? Same problems as biologicals.
Keep in mind, jttmab, that at this point in history the US is a very formidable and dangerous military power. As Mr. bin Laden is finding out, that can have unexpected effects. Like nations you were sure were your friends find their arms seriously twisted and decide to help the US. |
