Agree with most of what you said. It must of been disconcerting for the troops to see the lack of cohesion amongst the senior commanders. Suspect Montgomery was the cause of a good part of it.

Patton and his troops did a great job.

There were some good senior British commanders...Pip Roberts, Wavell, and O'Connor (early Desert campaign) I remember reading about... and a string of failures.

Montgomery finally became the queen bee when the Germans were beaten for the first time at El Alamain, but they (Germans) were also in static lines at considerable numerical disadvantage with few supplies, and little air cover. Very hard fought battle though 100% casualty rate amongst officers in the first few days of the attack.

He was then subsequently too cautious at Caen, then threw caution to the wind during Market Garden. Terrible losses in the best troops we had (like the polish paras)

Out of step with reality...

Reminds me of some of my investment ideas. -g-
