Little puffs of smoke....

First the hints from Rothdeutsch that he saw some things in Asia:

Not only do our checks indicate that AMD is sampling 0.13 micron Athlon 4 mobile products, but we think the company has seen working 0.13 micron silicon on Hammer, AMD s next generation processor. Hammer chipset development also appears to be proceeding nicely, and we expect Via and SiS to offer chipsets coincident with Hammer s introduction, eliminating AMD's need to develop one internally.

Then we get this speculation from Mike:

French firm Soitec, which told the world early in November that it had received multi-million orders from AMD for its 200- and 300-mm* special SOI wafers, has started delivering them.
A release yesterday said it had started to ship its Unibond wafers in large volume and had also started sampling the 12-inch wafers too.

But how many of the wafers it has started shipping will actually go to AMD is somewhat debatable.

When we ran the story last month, an AMD executive said that the firm will use the wafers to make its next generation of Hammer chips.

It's possible, of course, that AMD will also use the wafers for other processors up and coming.

It's very very rare for any new processor to be on time. AMD's already late with Hammer, but may be taking unprecedented steps to catch up quick.

Is there a possibility that Hammer is being pulled in at the same time McKinley is being pushed out?

Where there's smoke, there's fire?
