Hi LPS5; The Inquisition was a good example of Christian extremism, but there are plenty of others. What's wrong with the Islamic extremists is the backwardness of their nations, not the backwardness of their religion.

As soon as they get properly brought into the modern era (as is steadily happening, and is inevitable), their extremism will moderate for the same secular reasons extremism moderated in the Christian world.

Probably the worst thing for the Arab world was all that oil. The oil prevented the countries that should have been at the head of modernization from developing import replacing industries. Turkey had no oil and did best. It's likely that Pakistan, who also has no oil, will do well also.
