(Filed: 05/12/2001)

A PALESTINIAN suicide bomber wounded several people when explosives strapped to his body were prematurely detonated outside a hotel in central Jerusalem this morning.

The bomber was crossing the road outside the former Hilton Hotel when the device exploded. "A terrorist killed himself when he was crossing the road. A powerful bomb which was strapped to his body blew up. Nails and shrapnel flew in all directions. He was blown completely apart," said Jerusalem police chief Miki Levi.

Police said at least three people standing at a bus stop nearby were hurt by flying glass. Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility and said the bomber meant to blow himself up inside the hotel..

The attack followed an Israeli pledge that there would be no pause in two days of air strikes against Palestinian security installations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip after 25 people were killed in weekend suicide bombings, claimed by Islamic group Hamas.

Israel has blamed Palestinian president Yasser Arafat for today's attack, as well as the weekend bombings, because he has failed to rein in militants. Palestinian officials denied the charges and said Israel's actions amount to a declaration of war.
