Jerome,
I believe it is important that sharon come out of this as strong as possibe. He is not my favorite guy but the guy in the wings is much worse(Netanyahoo). He is a believer in the greater Israel theory that has support under Likud in the 80's. Sharon, on the other hand, is a military man. And like many military folks, not only do they know how to fight wars, they suffer the losses in a very personal way. Rabin was a tough guy too but he made peace or at least tried to. Remeber deGaulle in Algeria doing what the politicians couldn't or MacArthur in Japan for that matter. Sharon has that ability too. mike
PS As hopelessness increase Hamas support rises. But much of it is secular, not fundamentalist. Most Palestinians really just want a better life. Fundamentalism, anti-semitism and vicitmization make this very difficult. My advice to them would be to remain secular, eschew all forms of racism, and send their kids to schools where math and science are taught along with a truthful version of history.
