Mike:

There was a race at Pimlico some years back, where a horse
by the name of Marian Bender was the "mortal lock" of all
time. She was facing 5 or 6 others who had no chance of
doing anything. The betting was almost that she would win, and lap the field to place. The big money came out.

I don't have the exact payoffs, but they were something like:

Winner 60.80 75.20 115.80
Place 112.00 175.00
Show 195.60

Needless to say Marian missed the board, and the "bridge
jumpers" had a bad day.

When you have to right 19 of 20 times to break even,
it isn't really the "smart money" showing up.

Best wishes,

Bob
