In some cultures, gold is even eaten to cure such ailments as arthritis, ulcers and tuberculosis.

I remember reading many years ago that the Nizam of Hyderabad (India) reportedly ingested powdered gold, silver and crushed pearls , singly or in various combinations of these goodies, as aphrodisiacs.

It seems that many rich Indians ingest powdered gold and silver, too. Which led me to suggest to one above-ground gold hunter to go to India for easy pickings!

No wonder so much gold is used in India and its population rivals that of China (>1.25 billion or ~4 times the population of North America!)
