KT, I think one reason folks in the US do not save is that we have learned for the past 30 years or so that if you do not feel good about yourself, you simply need to buy something to fill up the void. It's an addictive cycle, as the debt load will thus stimulate spending. I know a lot of people who have had huge debt loads and then gone on a spending rampage (one was a week or two before declaring bankruptcy, and everything he bought went back). I've known several people who, upon having a marriage break up, immediately bought an expensive car. Stuff to make us happy. Can't buy happiness; can't buy love. But you can buy adrenaline rushes, and so that keeps the cycle going.
