Paul & All,

Today's San Jose Mercury News has an article in the Business section, entitled "Intel stakes its claim in portables market", in which it discusses a 120-MHz Pentium MMX chip to be available in the third quarter and "expected to be priced at about $106 per chip by the end of the year", in addition to announcing for delivery early next year "a version of its Pentium II processor that will fit into existing portable designs".

It states: "Those familiar with the company's strategy said the new chips - particularly the 120-MHz Pentium processor - were primarily designed to thwart efforts by Cyrix and AMD to establish their products in the portable arena."

It further states: "Intel officials acknowledged their plan to revamp the innovative, card-based architecture of the Pentium II so that it can be used in existing Pentium-based portable designs. That move will deprive AMD of a key argument: that manufacturers should choose its chips because they would have to redesign their systems to accept the Pentium II."

It also states: "The company wouldn't confirm plans to introduce the 120-MHz Pentium chip with MMX multimedia-enhancements, but officials did acknowledge that Intel is considering such a product. However, some system manufacturers have said that the chip is already on some pricing schedules for the third and fourth quarters of this year."

Any thoughts on how much change from the earlier roadmap either of these chips, prices and/or delivery dates may represent? [I had not heard of the 120-MHz MMX chip before. It doesn't sound to me that the Pentium II portable packaging is any different than earlier planned, although the wording about "existing portable designs" makes this somewhat unclear.]

Best regards,
Arno
