I don't know how the case statement is compiled to assembler. There were some reference to some kind of hash table, but my recollection is that hash table, the order of magnitude of the time to evaluate n cases is 1, meaning a fixed time. The only variable is the number of cases, and since the order of magnitude of evaluation, number of cases is irrelevant, the only thing the # of cases influences is the time to load them (meaning to decode them).
