Hey, I will say a word for "old school" traditional Judeo Christianity at this point. The thought expressed by this tradition is that connection to god is not immediate, therefore not unmediated. It is one thing that makes logical sense to me. How can I discover god who is "wholly other" and transcendent while I am physical and finite? Eastern religious thought contributes much truth about the illusory nature of life and what immediately attracts us. We should not be easily fooled by what appears to be real and worth trading our lives for. The discipline of learning koans are useful for this type of re-thinking. Yet I do not see us thinking our way to god, or otherwise contacting god without god initiating that contact. The gap is too great between us. That is a good contribution from the "old school" I say, even though it is out of vogue now.
