Centennial Communications Corp. today announced that it has brought high-tech 3G-ready mobile communications to Jamaica with the launch of its digital wireless service.
The wireless service uses the latest digital technology called CDMA, providing voice quality comparable to fixed line telephones. Centennial expects to offer its Jamaican customers 3G phones next year (one year ahead of many European countries), which will enable Jamaicans to access the internet at faster speeds than currently available over traditional phone lines.
With the launch of service in Jamaica, Centennial enhances its Caribbean-wide CDMA wireless network which currently provides digital service in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands, an area covering over 15 million people.
"We are truly excited about our recent launch in Jamaica, a market we believe is starved for more competition and improved services in telecommunications," said Carlos Bofill, Chief Executive Officer of Centennial's Caribbean operations. "We have the widest wireless coverage of any carrier in the Caribbean, a region we believe is significantly underserved. This coverage is bolstered by our common technology platform, CDMA, throughout the region, which facilitates roaming and our extensive terrestrial and undersea fiber-optic broadband network throughout the Caribbean."
