Hawk, The Jews were ORIGINALLY given their land by the British through this mandate. They were given this land, WHICH THE BRITISH
CONQUERED FROM THE OTTOMAN TURKS IN WWI, both in exchange for their service to the Allies, and as compensation for
the atrocities that occurred during WWII.

Therein lies a root of the problem for reasonable Palestinian and Arab folk. The people living in the mandated areas were citizens of the former empire with legal title to their land. (It's very likely the records from the time still exist although there may not be very many people who can read them). These folk were displaced and their land taken without compensation. This injustice has festered and the settlements policy is salt in the wound.

Something should be done about it and nothing can while the low level warfare continues. Extremists, of course, don't want to see anything reasonable done but the hell with them - most palestinian folk want to get on with their lives and left to their own devices, would, because the fundamental culture there is like ours - it's business and trading.

Israel has been impeded from dealing with this basic injustice so for all sorts of reasons which we both know about but in the end it will have to face it.
