Actually, I never committed to chess, or formal competition. I spent some time in college casually playing a guy who was a tournament player in high school (I forget his exact rating, but he won a lot), and got to the point of stalemating him, and occasionally beating him. Even when he won, it would be through retaining a few more pawns in the end game, because the games were closely fought. But I wouldn't spend the time studying grandmaster play, which is essential to proficiency.
