IGIT, re. verse 9:5 .... here is what I found, which is basically what I stated before, but may be more detailed....

first, it refers to the big pilgrimage (Hajj) which is during a certain time or the year unlike 2:190 that was in reference to going to Makkah for when it was not the time for Hajj

second, the prophet had a treaty with the non-believers which the non-believers violated by killing Muslims... and actually the "reasons of the verses" book states that the Khuza'ah tribe (which are non-believers) were killing people from Bani Bakr tribe, so the verses came to absolve Muslims from their treaty with them since the non-beleivers were violating it, and ordered Muslims to fight the non-beleivers...

the book even references people by name... such as Abi Sufian Ibn Harb, Alhareth Ibn Hesham, Suhail Ibn Amr, and Ekremah Ibn Abi Jahl and others of the leaders of Quraish who reneged on their treaty or promise with the Prophet pbuh.

regards
amein
