JAGDEO TO VISIT SURINAME

Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo will visit Suriname in the first half of January. Two commissions are involved in preparations for this visit, including the Border Commission. Foreign Affairs Minister Marie Levens announced the visit in Parliament on Tuesday. The Minister made this announcement when referring to measures Suriname is taking with regard to border security in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks. She added that in the area of Customs, there are arrangements and accords with the French authorities, as well as with Guyana. Relations between Suriname and Guyana cooled down when the Guyanese gave the Canadian company CGX permission to explore for oil in an area also claimed by Suriname. An oil rig was removed from the area in question by Suriname’s Navy in June 2000. Military threats and five rounds of talks between then President Jules Wijdenbosch and Jagdeo did not yield any results, and the Canadians left eventually. When a new Suriname government took office, tensions faded. In the sidelines of major international conferences, Jagdeo and current President Ronald Venetiaan did discuss this problem. It is expected that the border problem is one of the main items Jagdeo will want to discuss with Venetiaan.
