KT-- As for your Stanford vs. Miami scenario:

It reminds me of my late-'60s college football games. I went to a small, liberal arts college. We were terrific academically, but let us say, underdeveloped in athletics. No one, not even the team itself, took football too seriously. Our backup QB dropped acid at the beginning of each game.

Every year, we would get crushed by another school in our conference that actually recruited football players. They averaged a 70-pound advantage to us on the line. Once the foes piled up an advantage of more than 21 points or so, someone (alas, we had no cheerleaders) from the stands would ring out with the immortal chant: "We have higher SAT scores!"
