Joe,

re: Intel has to sell chips that are in the same desirability ballpark as AMD chips, but it means making chips that Intel can't make in sufficient quantity.

It seems to me that AMD is using marketing BS to try to get into Intel's ballpark. The OEM's don't seem to be buying it, do they? If you think that Intel is responding to the dead end Athlon, you are deceiving yourself. That chip is about done.

re: The shortage was a deliberate tradeoff.

Come on, Intel used the lull in the market to push P4 into the mainstream ahead of schedule. Demand has started to pick up, they are building capacity to meet the demand, as planned over a year ago. How many analysts have said "Intel has to cut capex in this market"? They didn't. Did they time this perfectly, maybe they missed by a quarter, damn good considering the predictions three-six-nine-twelve months ago.

Bottom line is that Intel has a lot of capacity coming on line, and has a processor with lots of head room. And it looks like we may have finally reached a semi upcycle.

It looks to me like Intel may have trumped AMD big time.

John
