What else do they make? Flash - Still all done in Japan by the Japanese - AMD is a serf to them. Chip Sets - AMD farms these off to a Taiwan Foundry. Programmable logic - Whoops - AMD sold that a couple years ago !! Communications chips - Whoops - those were done in AMD's Fab 14 and Fab 15 - and they are being shut down. What else is there?

Well... I don't know, but I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and you're making it tough. Like I said, you may be right. It is extremely difficult to try and come up with a scenario whereby AMD's yields are only very bad as opposed to terrible. I'm bending over backwards here trying to get them up to just plain bad. For anyone who has monitored fab yields as I have (and maybe you too) for hundreds of millions of units, there is just no way to explain how AMD's fabs, which have a capacity of about 10,000 WSPW, to produce only 7.7 Million Athlons per quarter with their die size, while still enjoying "yields second to none" as claimed by AMD brass. Even with limited capacity devoted to Athlon(why?). It's just not possible to be that bad if they had reasonable yields. This is so obvious to people who can run the numbers like you did that it's just beyond dispute. Too bad the analysts are just too ignorant or stupid to see what's staring them right in the face.

My estimate is that the only way AMD can claim world class yields and claim capacity constraints (and not be liars) is if they are only allocating about 30% of their fab capacity to processors. You be the judge.
