hi gdichaz,

as one who has had the opportunity to pay gift taxes on passing Qualcomm stock to family members...So your second point among the 3 * 's, is simply, wrong.

re: gifts, i was thinking more of the sort going to charitable organizations. you know, acts of generosity in the form of donations to qualified charities. the government doesn't tax those gifts (which may be tax deductible), and i expect they far outnumber gifts in excess of $10,000 per year from a parent (or $20,000 from both parents) to grown children and the like, which would be subject to the gift tax you mention.

those giving gifts as tax-deductible stock donations to charities obviously hope their gifts are valuable when given. and i imagine the charities hope so as well: they may perhaps sell the stock for cash upon receipt, so market value is important.

BTW suggest time is running out on purchase of the Q at these bargain prices

LOL! your quote would have been accurate 3 yrs ago...whether it will be accurate on a day when QCOM closed at $61.99, after a huge runup from 38, remains to be seen. let's check back in 10 years and see how they did compared to bonds!
