Bush to mark 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor attack

NORFOLK NAVAL STATION -- President Bush is marking the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which thrust the United States into World War II, by speaking from the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, which struck some of the first blows in the current war on terrorism.

About 10,000 sailors and Marines and their families are expected to pack the 4.5 acre flight deck today to listen to Bush, who is making his first visit to Hampton Roads since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

In addition to the service members and their families, about 2,000 White House invitees, including congressional and military leaders, will attend.

Most of Virginia's congressional delegation is expected to attend, including Sens. John Warner and George Allen.

Also invited were Pearl Harbor veterans in Hampton Roads.

Adm. Robert Natter, Atlantic Fleet commander, said it's appropriate Bush will speak from the deck of the USS Enterprise, which launched its warplanes Oct. 7 in the first wave of attacks against Taliban troops in Afghanistan.

Some have likened the Sept. 11 attacks to the Dec. 7, 1941, attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor.

"I think there is some symbolism here," Natter said, "and I think he'll probably talk about it. I don't think it escapes any American's mind about the comparison between the two events."

"The president said he wanted to come down and talk to the sailors and Marines and their families," Natter said. "The president will say some important things, I am certain."

Hampton residents Petty Officer 1st Class Scott Jackson, 32, and his wife will be two of those listening. "As soon as I found out the president was coming I told my wife. Absolutely, we'll be there," Jackson said.

If he could ask Bush a question, Jackson said it would be about the Navy's future role in the war against terrorism, "because I think this is probably going to be ongoing."

Natter said he agrees with Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that the war on terrorism is going to be a long war.

"I don't think it is just Afghanistan," Natter said.

Asked about the recent report three Special Forces troops were killed and at least 19 injured in a friendly fire bombing incident, Natter said, "I want to fix it as fast as I can. Having said that, war is an ugly business. It's conducted by people against people all trying to kill one another. These kinds of things will happen."

Wednesday, sailors began erecting the bleachers and stage Bush will use.

Lately, the Big "E," as the Newport News-built nuclear carrier is known, has gotten a lot of attention. Two weeks ago it was the site of a concert by country music star Garth Brooks.

"The visit is little bit overwhelming," said Jackson. "There is a lot of work, but the attitude on the ship is incredibly positive."
