I don't think using a password is optional on XP professional. I'm not positive, but I couldn't find a way to avoid using one.

I feel a bit more secure this way. It's not just people who have physical access to your computer that you need to worry about. The password layer can deter remote hackers from entering your system. I sure couldn't get in when I first hooked up my network till I got the password issue worked out.
