More than $ 608.69 mln earmarked for anti-drought fight

Morocco has earmarked more than 7 billion Dirhams ($ 608.69 million) as part of a program to fight the effects of drought, communication minister, Mohammed Achaari, said Thursday.
Achaari, who was speaking to the press at the end of a weekly meeting of the government council said, agriculture minister, Ismail Alaoui informed the council that the efforts made part of the anti-drought struggle have yielded positive results for the promotion of the rural world.
Out of the seven billion Dirhams, six are supplied by the State ad the remaining sums were paid by local councils and the National Program of Decentralized Development, the minister said.
The program seeks to generate jobs for rural population, safeguard the livestock, guarantee regular water supply and protect forests.
Morocco is facing a fourth consecutive season of drought that deals serious harm to agriculture, one of the major vectors of the country's economy. The sector contributes nearly 17 percent to Morocco's Gross National Product (GNP) and employs half of a 10-million workforce.
