Fargonaut,
What model Linksys do you have?
I have the DEFSR41. It works fine with Zonealarm.
While I don't get scanned sinced getting the router
Zonealarm is still useful to control which programs
can access the internet and which can act as servers.
Routers come with NAT firewalls. NAT stands for Network
Address Translators. As far as vulnerability the firewall
will prevent anyone scanning for open ports from finding
you but an experienced hacker could probably break in.
The safest thing to do is only share documents you want to
be secure when they need to be shared. Stuff like music and
photos can always be left shared. I always leave file
sharing enabled but leave very few folders shared. As far
as passwords you have to weigh convience vs. security. I
keep my PCs set to require a password. In the unlikely
event someone breaks through my firewalls they still won't
be able to get into my files without keying Ctrl Alt Del
and ending my user name and password.
