ISRAEL REJECTS PALESTINIAN CALL TO EASE STRIKES December 8, 2001

Reuters reports: “Israeli security chiefs rejected a Palestinian request on Friday for an easing of retaliatory measures against the Palestinian territories, saying not enough had been done to crack down on Palestinian militants.

An Israeli official told Reuters the request came during a U.S.-brokered meeting of Israeli and Palestinian security commanders near Tel Aviv, the first since a new wave of Palestinian suicide bombings and a fierce Israeli military response.

`It was a difficult meeting,' the Israeli official said. 'We were firm in raising our contention that the Palestinians are arresting only second- and third-rate terrorists, rather than going for the main culprits.' Israel says it will step up its strikes until Palestinian President Yasser Arafat acts firmly against those threatening the Jewish state's security.

Sharon has accused Arafat of just making token arrests in response to Israeli and U.S. demands for a crackdown on militants…”
